The Rongorongo of Easter Island

Copyright Matters

The late Thomas Barthel has bequeathed his materials to the Cercle d'Études sur l'Île de Pâques et la Polynésie (C.E.I.P.P.). Although the contents of this Web site are protected by copyright, the usual restrictions would defeat its purpose, the C.E.I.P.P.'s work, and Barthel's intent.

There are no restrictions on copying and distributing the contents of this site as long as the sources are acknowledged and the distribution is non-profit.

Sources:

  • Photographs: C.E.I.P.P. unless otherwise indicated.
  • Drawings and transliteration of the corpus: C.E.I.P.P.
  • Texts and presentation: rongorongo.org, unless otherwise indicated.
All this is in accord with the spirit of the United States copyright laws, whereby the advancement of knowledge takes precedence over the narrow interpretation of copyright. For an example of an apparent breach of copyright, go back to the home page, click on the photograph of Sebastian Englert near a moai, read the explanatory text accompanying the photograph, click on the link without permission. Read that page. What is better? To cling to a narrow legalistic interpretation of copyright, or to pay homage to a great man? Go back to the home page, click on the picture of a tablet. The same without permission is there. What is better? To cling to a narrow legalistic interpretation of copyright, or to publicize the best, most informative photograph of the rongorongo script even taken?
